The Facts on our Flannel

After years of sourcing and testing, and what seems like miles of fabric, Coyuchi has developed 100% organic cotton flannel that feels amazing, resists pilling and meets our strict environmental standards (earning GOTS certification). Crafted by a family-owned mill founded in 1948 in the Ave River Valley of Portugal, where the textile tradition stretches back centuries, our Cloud Brushed Flannel is a favorite of Coyuchi customers, who call it "substantial and cozy," "deliciously warm" and, quite simplypersonalized gifts for mom, "heavenly."

What is Flannel?

Historically, flannel referred to a woolen fabric, but these days the term is more often applied to cotton fabric that's woven from thick yarns and brushed on one or both sides. Thicker than percale and sateen, cotton flannel has a velvety surface that feels warm to the touch, even when you first slip into bed, and traps body heat to help you stay cozy all night long. Many variables contribute to the quality of the fabric—both how it feels initially and how it performs over time.?In short: not all flannel is created equal. Coyuchi has spent a lot of time and energy in pursuit of the perfect flannel for our sheets, pajamas and robes.

Good, Better, Best

Our Cloud Brushed flannel begins with high-quality, 100% organic cotton, loomed in a strong, plain weave and then brushed multiple times, on both sides. This unique process, developed by our partner mill, creates the plush surface—or “nap”—that makes our flannel so luxuriously soft. It also reduces pilling without the use of chemicals, so Cloud Brushed flannel looks and feels wonderful wash after wash.

Unlike other fabrics, flannel is woven with a heavy weft construction, so fabric weight—not thread count – is the gauge of? quality. Coyuchi’s flannel is a hefty six ounces, making it uncommonly durable, with a lush drape and wonderful warmth.

During the winter months, it's the perfect layer of toasty, breathable comfort under a duvet, blanket or quilt. But we also love it on its own for those chilly nights of fall and spring…or even summer, here on the foggy Northern California coast.

Caring for Coyuchi Flannel

We recommend that you wash your Coyuchi flannel before your first use because it will shrink to size. We suggest washing in cold water on the delicate cycle with a plant-based laundry detergent and no chlorine bleach. ?We never recommend fabric softener, but especially not for flannel, as it can actually cause the fabric to pill. Tumble on low, removing your sheets, robe or pajamas from the dryer as soon as they are dry. ?This is very important to dry on low heat, as high heat or over drying will make any flannel feel stiff. ?You can expect to see some lint the first time you wash flannel, as some of the surface fibers that were loosened in the brushing process are shed. Over time, through use and proper laundering, the nap will reduce, become a more natural and organic surface, and will reist pilling to stay cozy and soft for years to come.?

The Pantone Colour Institute have been selecting their Colour of the Year since the year 2000, so it’s safe to say they know what colour will be big in the coming year. The Pantone Colour of the Year is no longer just about trends, it’s about conveying a message or a feeling, showing people who you are, how you are feeling and what your home means to you. Years ago, when my grandmother died, I inherited a vast and wondrous collection of sewing kit odds and ends that she had amassed over the years, some of it clearly collected from her parents and grandparents. I remarked at the time, "I need a serious sewing box!"
